17th Annual Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show sponsored by the Northern Virginia Mineral Club Show site - George Mason University, Student Union Bldg II, Rte 123 & Braddock Rd, Fairfax, VA


Hrs: Saturday 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Approximately 20 Dealers selling Minerals, Fossils, Crystals, Gems, Jewelry, Meteorites & more!  Also, Demonstrations, Exhibits, Door Prizes & Kid's Activities including Mini-mines & Fossil Dig.  Silent Auction on Sunday afternoon. Adults $4, Seniors (65+) $3, Teens (13-17) $3, Children (12 & under) FREE, Scouts in uniform FREE.  Follow directional signs to designated Mineral Show parking on GMU campus.

FIELD TRIP – Saturday, June 14th:  June's field trip is to the Willis Mountain Kyanite Mine, 30 Willis Mountain Lane, Dillwyn, VA 23936.  The main mineral is kyanite and a host of other minerals which can be viewed on www.mindat.org - do a locality search for Willis Mountain Mine.  You can also view the kyanite at www.kyanite.com and take notice of the special activities occurring at the mine that weekend.
 
Club members only.  Meet at the Manager's Office no later than 9:30 am.  We will collect from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Kids are welcome if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  This is a hard rock quarry and you will need steel toed boots, hard hat, safety goggles, heavy work gloves, rock hammer, rock chisels, buckets/egg cartons and paper to wrap specimens.  Don't forget plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen.

Past Field Trips

FIELD TRIP – Sunday, May 4th:  May's field trip is to the Rockville Crushed Stone Inc Quarry for grossular garnets, quartz, calcite, serpentine, zoisite, and much more (these are what I've found in the past). The address is 13900 Piney Meetinghouse Road, Rockville, MD 20850.

IMPORTANT NOTES: This is a SUNDAY field trip - John Boyer will not be attending this field trip. Rober Windsor has volunteered to lead this field trip. To sign up, email Robert at photech@comcast.net or call Robert at 540-751-0922. The quarry manager has set a limit of 20 participants. To our club members signed up for the Montgomery County Club field trip on May 18th, please be considerate and attend that field trip only to open up space for our non-Montgomery club folks.

New club members must supply your own safety gear, hammers, chisels, etc.

FIELD TRIP – April 12th:  National Limestone Quarry, 217 Quarry Road, Mount Pleasant Mills, PA 17853. Check in no later than 8:45 am. We will collect from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This quarry is terrific - I'm told - for wavellite, strontianite, fluorite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, lots of calcite crystals and more. Kids are welcome. This is a hard rock quarry and you will need heavy boots, hard hat, safety goggles, heavy work gloves, rock hammer, rock chisels, buckets/egg cartons and paper to wrap specimens. Don't forget plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen.

FIELD TRIP – March 22th:

(trip moved do to flooding from March 8th.)

2008's first field trip is to the Vulcan Materials Company - Manassas Quarry, Saturday, March 8th, for prehnite, calcite, apophyllite, stilbite and many more. The address is 8537 Vulcan Lane, Manassas, VA 20109. Meet at the Manager's Office no later than 7:45 am. We will collect from 8:00 am to 11:30 am (we must leave NLT noon). Kids are welcome if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All participants must sign a liability waiver prior to entering the mine. This is a hard rock quarry and you will need heavy boots (preferably steel toed), hard hat, safety goggles, heavy work gloves, rock hammer, rock chisels, buckets/egg cartons and paper to wrap specimens. Don’t forget water, snacks and sunscreen. This field trip is open only to members of the Northern Virginia Mineral Club. John Boyer must know of your plans to attend before Friday, March 7th in order to notify you of a cancellation due to weather or quarry operations. Field Trip – December 8th: 

CANCELLED due to dangerous Weather conditions in.

December's field trip is to the Martin-Marietta Pinesburg Quarry, 14932 Bottom Road, Williamsport, MD 21795 for quartz (smoky and Herkimer diamond), calcite, dolomite, barite and fluorite. Meet at the Manager’s Office no later than 8:30 am. We will collect from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Kids are welcome. This is a hard rock quarry and you will need heavy boots (preferably steel toed), hard hat, safety goggles, heavy work gloves, rock hammer, rock chisels, buckets/egg cartons and paper to wrap specimens. Don’t forget water, snacks and sunscreen.

As an added bonus, the quarry manager has promised us a loader and driver to move or turn material to expose more minerals for us.

Field Trip – July 28th: Martin-Marietta Pinesburg Quarry, 14932 Bottom Road, Williamsport, MD 21795 for quartz (smoky and Herkimer diamond), calcite, dolomite, barite, limonite, pyrolusite and fluorite. I have found micro-crystals of aquamarine growing out of whitish-pink saddle dolomite here. 

Field Trip – July 21st: Martin-Marietta Boonsboro Quarry, 20301 Benevola Church Road, Boonsboro, MD 21713 for for same minerals as in the Pinesburg Quarry - the quarry is composed of the same dolomitic limestone formation.

FIELD TRIP - June 2th:  FULL  Dale Quarry, Chester, VA.  There was only 20 spots.
